Abstract

Abstract This study examines evaluative meaning construction in Chairil Anwar’s poem “Aku” using the Appraisal Framework within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). While the poem is widely interpreted as expressing existential individualism in Indonesian modern literature, limited research has explored how such meanings are linguistically realized. Employing qualitative discourse analysis, this study analyzes evaluative lexical and clausal units through the subsystems of Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation (Martin & White, 2005). The findings indicate that Judgement and Affect dominate the Attitude system, constructing the lyrical persona as an autonomous and anti-normative subject. Engagement patterns reveal a strongly monoglossic stance that reinforces discursive authority, while Graduation intensifies meaning through hyperbolic and metaphorical expressions. The study argues that the ideology of individualism emerges from systematic interpersonal meaning-making rather than thematic content alone. This research contributes to expanding appraisal-based literary analysis within Indonesian poetic discourse.
